As we learned last week, the first method in the unifying practice is watching an image, so this week we practised shamatha with a choice of different images. We were reminded of the three principles of 25% mindfulness (of the image in this case), 25% awareness (to check whether we are being mindful of the image) and 50% spaciousness (not getting involved in stories about the image).
We had lots of different images, including photos of HH Dalai Lama and Sogyal Rinpoche, a lotus flower, a candle and some pebbles. It’s interesting how different minds react differently when we try something new. You can choose your own image to practise with and see how you get on. Try 5 or 10 minutes, then take a short (1 minute) break and start again. See how your mind is with watching an image.
